Workshops in Schools and Colleges

Graeme Hare Latin/African drumming workshop tutor

We have been running drumming workshops for seventeen years and now have one of the largest teams of facilitators in the UK. In this time we have lead many Latin/African Drumming workshops at numerous schools, colleges and universities all over the country. We have developed a successful repertoire of African and Latin Drumming rhythms and styles, and as a result of this, the students we have worked with have achieved excellent results.

African/Latin drumming styles

Latin Drumming has African roots due to the forced movement of African men, women and children as slaves that occurred during the exploration and colonisation of the “new world”. Latin drumming's strongest characteristic is its rhythm, which is highly syncopated, unique for the type of rhythmic structures it builds upon. Some of the rhythms used include Samba, Bossa-nova, Rumba, Mambo, Salsa and many more. The music is traditionally performed at Carnivals, religious ceremonies and as dancing music.

Aim

Using African Djembes and handheld percussion, students of all ages and standards can explore both Latin and African styles of drumming, to perform a variety of styles and rhythms. Working in groups the students can develop team skills, musical awareness, history of rhythm, concentration skills and focus.

Flexibility

All our workshops are very flexible and can be tailored to meet your needs. The standard format is as follows:

  • 5 - 6 groups per day
  • We can comfortably accommodate groups/classes of 30+ students
  • Workshop duration 45 mins per group
  • Age range - 6 years upwards

Things to Note

  • The workshops are energetic, fun and informative.
  • When planning your sessions please consider space, who is within hearing distance of the workshop and if any children may be disturbed by loud noises.
  • If you are planning to continue with Drumming music after the workshop I can help you to get equipment.
  • If the weather allows it is possible to work outside.
  • It is expected that the class teachers / youth workers will be present throughout the workshop for safety reasons.
  • All our facilitators are CRB checked and have public liability insurance.
